Meet two devoted sisters:
Keturah and Lexi Weaver
In becoming an intern at the Clinic, Keturah, who is studying to be a medical administrator, joins her sister Lexi, a pediatric clinical assistant and research coordinator.
Keturah, age 18, brings a much greater understanding of the Clinic’s work than most interns though. She was born with an upper jaw that is smaller than her lower jaw and she has few upper teeth which makes occlusion
and chewing hard. Lexi, nearly
21 years old, says that for herself, working at the Clinic brings together her personal knowledge of what many young patients
and their families experience as well as her desire to understand craniofacial di erences and to improve treatment outcomes.
It was in part growing up with a
younger sister who had a craniofacial di erence that led Lexi to want to improve treatment outcomes through the Americleft research project.
But as someone train-
ing to be a medical
administrative assis-
tant, Keturah is more interested in medical coding than research. Having been on the receiving end of a lot of medical invoices in her life (and challenging them on occasion!), she is very interested in how coding works and wants to go on to York Technical Insti- tute to study medical coding and billing. When asked why she likes the subject, Keturah, says, “It is like the book Where’s Waldo. It is exciting like solving a puzzle.”
Keturah has been a patient at LCPC for 2 years but this summer is special. In July she is lined up for jaw surgery with Dr. Samson. When talking to Keturah, her excitement about the future is obvious as is her gratitude for
all the Clinic does and all she
is learning in her medical administration course at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.
